I wanted to get this out to you so you had an idea what we were going to attempt this coming month. We will be meeting on November 14th, at the King County Library Annex building in Issaquah, at 9am. I wanted to move the date up so we wouldn’t have issues with those who might be traveling for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Those wanting breakfast will meet at the Raging River Cafe at 8am.
Remember Dues for the 26’/27′ year are due and they remain $40.00, you can pay via PayPal through Megan Brocco brocco.megan@gmail.com
You can also pay Steve at the meeting for those who participate at the meetings.
As we have talked, our monthly patterns are selected for having either techniques or materials incorporated in the recipe, and this pattern, the Barkworth has options for the tier. Speaking with Mark about this we discussed this fly as having yellow Toucan as a body veiling, I said there was another option, which I shared with him. Mark noted that most books used Yellow Toucan, which was correct, but another book said Orange Toucan from under the tail was to be used as the body veiling. While I personally don’t like Toucan, I will be using a substitute in the form of a dyed Orange Hen patch, or Yellow as is called for. I will speak more about pattern interpretation at the meeting. You can use what you like, I just like to show you pattern options as many will not have Orange Toucan. That’s fine use what you have! Also I am going to use Quill dyed Straw color for the rear section as called for, but any pale yellow silk will suffice. This fly is in the Whole Feather Wing category, utilizing whole tippets for the underwing. Try to pick well tapered tippets, not large triangle tippets, in this case smaller is better. Note that the recipe calls for the main wing to “Veil” the tippets, which to me indicates seeing some tippet above and below the main wing. Also it calls for Light Mottled Turkey dyed Orange, don’t sweat it, just use Orange Turkey or Goose. Blue Macaw is also in the wing, use it, or just use Blue Turkey. Two toppings are called for, but use one if you hate toppings! Lol, And finally just to mess with you it calls for a Herl head, again, just black thread will be fine. We will go over all of this but thought that some planning ahead of the meeting will get you thinking about the route your going to take. I have said that we will be trying to increase the difficulty in upcoming patterns, and while this isn’t crazy hard, there is enough in it to make you think about the planning and execution of your pattern. Interpretation of any given pattern is a personal thing, but they do have standards built into the recipe, and I believe we should adhere to them as best as we can. Substitutes fit in here, and use them freely.
If your in need of quality materials please reach out to our friend John McLain for your tying supplies, John knows and carries really good materials, do yourself a favor and get ahold of John. feathersmc.com
Mark will have the program set up for our non attending members for your viewing as well as commentary as we tie. Always entertaining, as I always look forward to having Jim Ferguson pipe in and create a fun environment. Love ya’ Jim!! Feedback is always beneficial, so please tell Mark what’s working or anything we can do better to provide a pleasant experience. Thanks Mark. He will also send out a pre meeting zoom address prior to the meeting so you can tune in and participate.
I am going to put in the effort to slow down a little, so you can tie with me, and extend our day. So many travel distances to get here and last month we finished really early, I want you to participate throughout the day. I will dress the whole hook, from installing Gut, the tapering and a Uni-stretch or wooly Nylon for the padded body taper. So we’re starting from scratch on this one for those who need to see it done. I will be tying on one of Byron’s hooks as usual, this will be a Jock Scott 4/0.
Coffee will be on, beverages will be in the cooler, and I am thinking about snacks or lunch. Bring goodies if you can, it always helps. That’s it for now, see you all on Saturday November 14th, in Issaquah.
